An
Economist's View of Exporting
- In the U.S., we know
trade is important.
Exports support over 11
million jobs.
- Jobs related to
exporting pay on average
8-16% higher wages than
jobs that are not related
to exporting.
- The number of jobs in
U.S. manufacturing plants
that export increased
between 21 and 36 percent
faster than in
non-exporting plants.
- Exports of services are
also growing, reaching a
record 257 billion dollars
in 1999. In services, we
run a net surplus with the
world, in contrast to
manufactured items where
we run a large and growing
deficit.
- It is estimated that 38
percent of all economic
expansion in the United
States between 1994 and
1997 can be attributed to
exports.
- The number of Smaller
businesses, what we call
SMEs - for Small and
Medium-sized enterprises -
that export has tripled in
the past few years to over
200,000 as of 1998, the
last year for which we
have data. SMEs are very
involved in markets such
as China, where 87 percent
of U.S. exports in 1997
originated from SMEs.
These are interesting
times, and profitable
times, for this
group of U.S. companies.
- And opportunities for
growth are very good.
Since fewer than 2 percent
of SMEs currently export,
a doubling of this number
would have very favorable
economic results.
- We also know that 63
percent of SMEs that
export, send their goods
to one market. We'd like
to see them expand to
other markets in the same
region, and the Commercial
Service has programs in
place to help them.
- The vast majority of
Washtenaw and Jackson
County exporters are
classified as SME
companies. For a
