Are You Getting Your Fair Share?


As the Internet has grown, so too have the opportunities to have your firm know internationally. The following are but some of the places where your firm can be listed free of charge:

  • dmoz open directory project – dmoz is a volunteer staffed indexing service where you are able to list your website and a brief description of services rendered for free. Please contact: http://www.dmoz.org/. This site is also indexed by leading search engines.
  • Hoovers - Austin, Texas-based Hoover's provides business information online through its flagship Web site, Hoover's Online: The Business Network – http://www.hoovers.com.   Hoover's Online also provides news, business features, lists, stock quotes, and other business information such as Hoover's Industry Snapshots (global industry overviews). Hoover's covers some 14,000 public and private enterprises worldwide. Free, advertiser-supported information is available on all 14,000 companies; Hoover's also offers access to information on another 35,000 companies. In-depth information on 8,000 of the enterprises is available only to the company's more than 100,000 paying subscribers.   • OneSource CorpTech Profiles - http://www.corptech.com.  OneSource publishes high-quality data (contacts and company information) on one of America's strongest business segments, high-tech manufacturing, development and services: companies that make, develop and provide services related to everything from lasers to computers, and from biotech products to advanced materials.   • SuperPages – Owned by GTE, SuperPages serves as an electronic "Yellow Pages". Unique functions enable your firm to be displayed with a map of where you’re located as well as detailed driving directions.   • The Thomas Global Register (TGR) is a directory of 500,000 manufacturers and distributors from 22 countries, classified by 10,500 products and services categories.   • The Thomas Register – Published annually, Thomas Register of American Manufacturers is by far the most complete and helpful specifying and buying guide published today. The Thomas Register is used by Commercial Sections of the US Embassies worldwide to identify prospective suppliers of products and services. The internet based version has greatly expanded the availability of information to prospective foreign buyers. It provides "instant" sourcing information on nearly 58,000 industrial products and services, along with comprehensive specifications and availability information from thousands of manufacturers. In all, more than 1,700,000 individual product/service sources are included. Thomas Register in print contains a complete 3 - volume Company Profile section and a comprehensive 8 - volume Catalog File section. Headquarters and branch addresses, phone numbers and asset ratings are provided on more than 156,000 U.S. and Canadian firms.   • TMOnline - TM OnLine is a database of U.S. small businesses that seek to export their products. To be included this database, a U.S. small business must first register its company and export information and receive a password for future reentry to update their exporter profile. TM OnLine is also a search engine for foreign firms and U.S. businesses seeking a U.S. business partner or supplier, through such means as direct product sales, licensing or franchising agreements. TM OnLine will also be used by the SBA to recruit for foreign trade missions and to provide trade leads to registered companies.  To register:

  • The Global Technology Network (GTN)  - The Global Technology Network is a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program designed to assist small and medium-size U.S. companies gain access to developing markets.

    GTN facilitates the transfer of technology and services from the U.S. to countries world wide through the dissemination of trade leads free of charge. GTN focuses primarily on four industry sectors:

  1. Agricultural Technology

  2. Communications & Information Technology 

  3. Environment & Energy Technology 

  4. Health Technology

These are but a few of the opportunities for your firm to gain an additional web presence. Everyone who uses the www to source products has their own favorite directories, search engines, browsers and databases that they use. If you want to be known on the WWW, don’t rely on the search engines alone where the best "Yahoo" has only been able to index about twenty percent of web content.
